Jan is a musician and an artist. She plays bodhran, tin whistle and fiddle with Áine and joined the band in 2017.
Long ago there was the haunting music of Riverdance that lured Jan into a culture of music that changed her whole family’s lives. She had to play this toe tapping, lively, music that carried with it a long, ancient heritage. Being a classical flute player years earlier, she left that behind and picked up the Irish Pennywhistle, then after hearing the raw beauty of Irish/Scottish fiddling, she started playing the fiddle her great, great uncle had made in 1911. Of course the driving rhythms of the Irish drum, the Bodhran, was an instrument she had to play as well!
Soon enough Jan started playing with her twin sister and a group of friends and formed the band, Tintangel, which had a good 10yr run with 2 CD’s and numerous performances at Pubs, Celtic Festivals, private parties, and opening for bands like Solas, Gaelic Storm, The Fenians and more through the years. Jan’s daughters also became competitive Irish dancers, often dancing at their performances. Her eldest daughter competed at ‘Worlds’ in Belfast, Ireland in 2004!
The band members all went their separate ways a few years ago to pursue other quests…..and rest!
A private Fine Art instructor for the past 25 years, Jan’s love of all things Celtic has certainly influenced her art as well. She’s also written and Illustrated 2 Indie children’s books.
Jan recently retired with her husband to Payson AZ from So. California. They sought out venues with live music and came across Áine! Jan is now honored to be back playing music again with these accomplished musicians of Áine and enjoying the Craic! Slainte’!!
